Important October 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

October brings several important tax deadlines for individuals. If you requested additional time to file earlier this year, this month marks the final extended deadline for your 2025 individual income tax returns and foreign financial account reporting. Additionally, individuals who receive tip income have routine reporting requirements to fulfill during the month to stay on track.

Filing taxes and meeting financial deadlines

October 13: Reporting Tip Income to Employers

If you are an employee who works for tips and received more than $20 in tips during the month of September, you are required to report those earnings to your employer no later than October 13. You can submit this information using IRS Form 4070, or you may provide your own written statement. If you create your own statement, it must include your signature, your name, address, and Social Security number, along with your employer’s name and address (or the establishment's name, if different). Be sure to also state the month or period the report covers and the total amount of tips you received during that timeframe.

Once reported, your employer is required to withhold FICA taxes and income tax for these tips directly from your regular wages. In cases where your regular wages are insufficient to cover the FICA and tax withholding, the employer will report the amount of the uncollected withholding in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will then be required to pay that uncollected withholding when you file your annual tax return.

October 15: Individual Tax Returns

For taxpayers who requested an automatic 6-month extension to file their 2025 income tax return, October 15 is the deadline to finalize your paperwork. By this date, you must file Form 1040 and submit payment for any tax, interest, and penalties that are due.

October 15: Foreign Financial Interests

If you received an automatic 6-month extension of time to report your 2025 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, October 15 is also your due date. You will need to file Form FinCEN 114 to meet this reporting obligation.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments

Filing deadlines occasionally fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. When this happens, the due date is automatically extended until the next business day that is not itself a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Filing Extensions

Geographical areas designated as disaster areas receive administrative relief, which means your due dates will be extended. To verify whether an area has been designated as a disaster area and to find the updated filing extension dates, consult the following official resources:
